New York, NY –Festival of the Aegean 2007
offers its best summer yet with a season including fully staged
productions of Mascagni’s opera Zanetto (in its Greek premiere)
and Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet (in English with Greek surtitles);
gala vocal and orchestral programs; two nights of “Jazz at the
Apollo”; and, to cap it all off, an evening of Greek rembetika
music.
Says Peter Tiboris, the festival’s founder,
general director, and artistic director, “‘Great music in a great
place’ is the theme of Festival of the Aegean, and an international
roster of soloists will bring their world-renowned artistry to
this Aegean Paradise.”
Mr. Tiboris and guest conductor Gerhart Track
will lead the Bohuslav Martinů Philharmony from the Czech Republic
in the classical concerts. In addition, this year the festival
is venturing into jazz, with performances by Greek jazz groups
Human Touch with David Lynch, and the Stratos Vougas Jazz Quartet.
The coda of the festival will be a performance by Taximi, a Greek
rembetika group based in Sweden.
All Festival of the Aegean 2007 performances
will take place in the historic Apollo Municipal Theater. Known
as “La Piccola Scala,” the Apollo Theater was modeled after Milan’s
famed La Scala Opera House. The theater was commissioned on October
30, 1861, and its first performance, Donizetti’s opera La Favorita,
took place on October 3, 1864. The theater is well known as a
tourist destination and to residents of Syros Island alike for
its opera and theatrical presentations.
The Festival of the Aegean was founded in
2000 by Peter Tiboris, founder, general director and artistic
of MidAmerica Productions in New York. In 2005, the Festival
performed its first fully staged opera, Rossini’s Il barbiere
di Siviglia. Last year’s Festival of the Aegean paid tribute
to the 250th anniversary of Mozart’s birth with sold-out performances
of Don Giovanni. One of this year’s highlights is sure to be
the Greek premiere of the opera Zanetto, by Pietro Mascagni.
Peter Tiboris founded MidAmerica Productions,
Inc., in 1984 with its first concert on January 7, 1984, which
also served as his New York debut, conducting the American Symphony
Orchestra and the Louisiana Choir in Rossini's Stabat Mater and
two contemporary works by Dinos Constantinides. As an independent
producer of classical concerts, MidAmerica presents soloists
and choral and instrumental ensembles from around the world in
New York's Carnegie Hall, Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall,
Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, and Lincoln Center's Avery
Fisher Hall. MidAmerica also presents concerts in throughout
Europe.
To date, MidAmerica has produced nearly 900
concerts worldwide, featuring 2500 American ensembles and more
than 100 international ensembles—over 100,000 performers in all.
